Alla fine degli anni '80 l'evoluzione tecnologica aveva permesso di trasformare gli home in computer multimediali.
Atari con il modello 1040ST aveva raggiunto le stesse prestazioni dei Commodore Amiga.
Grazie all'integrazione delle porte MIDI conquistò velocemente il mercato sia hobbistico che professionale del settore musicale.
Acorn invece realizzò l'Archimedes, il primo home computer dotato di processore RISC.
Un po' tutte le aziende che erano in questo settore commercializzarono aggiornamenti più o meno consistenti ai propri modelli,
come ad esempio il CPC 464+ Amstrad, ed il Sam Coupè sulla carta il più potente home ad 8 bit retrocompatibile con lo ZX Spectrum
ma commercializzato quando ormai i 16 bit erano già disponibili.
Il mondo dell'informatica era però giunto al momento di svolta: la standardizzazione. Olivetti, con il PC1, comprese quello che stava accadendo e con il PC1 realizzò un home compatibile però con i PC IBM: il sistema operativo era Ms Dos ma la mancanza di slot e quindi di espansioni lo resero poco utilizzabile. |
